Oftentimes people come into my office and they tell me that they're in a great deal of pain, and those patients can't tell me how they caused it.
They're racking their brains, and they can't come up with what they did to cause this amount of pain.
The story is often, "Doc, I was just picking up a sock."
Well, chances are it was more likely an accumulation of smaller traumas that you just didn't think was a trauma, such as swinging around kettlebells at the gym, stepping off those last three stairs when you're rushing out the door in the morning, or picking up your toddler at a weird angle.
All of those actions accumulate as traumas in your spine and your body.
That's why it's so very important to have your spine checked regularly so that we can detect and correct any of those small problems before they become, "I was just picking up a sock."
